No team, no office, no investors. Just one developer, a laptop and an idea: generate realistic photos of anyone from a few selfies. Less than two years after launch, Photo AI brings in over $100,000 a month, according to the figures its creator openly publishes.
Years of failure before success
Pieter Levels is famous among “indie hackers” for launching dozens of projects, often in just a few days. Most never took off. A few, like Nomad List and Remote OK, became profitable. When AI image models arrived, he was ready: he knew how to launch fast and sell.
The Photo AI method
- Launched on February 10, 2023, with about $5,400 in revenue in the first week according to his posts.
- Paid from day one: no unlimited free version.
- Deliberately simple technology (PHP, SQLite) and AI models rented through the Replicate API.
- Everything is shared in public on social media, which works as free marketing.
The revenue figures quoted are the ones Pieter Levels publishes himself.
They vary from month to month; he has shown dips himself as annual plans and cancellations even out.
These stories are real, but they are exceptions.
For every success in the headlines, thousands of projects never take off. What you can copy is not the result, it is the method.
What you can learn from it
- You do not need the most modern technology, just a product that works.
- Renting AI through an API costs far less than building it.
- Launching many small projects increases your chances of one succeeding.
- Charging right away tells you very quickly whether the idea is worth anything.
